Hello!

I'm a bit of an archivist at heart, and I want to ask you a question. Have you ever wanted to talk to someone who lived 500 years ago? I don't know about you, but I definitely have. Being able to do so would be amazing.

Of course, that's not possible - but we have the opportunity to allow the people of the future to do the next best thing. To wit, I'm wondering if you've considered the idea of keeping a copy of ChatGPT in stasis for archival purposes?

It's clear that ChatGPT is very culturally relevant in terms of what it can talk about. It would be pretty great if a copy of ChatGPT could be archived - without changes other than to the frontend - so that people in the future would be able to "talk to someone from the past" in this manner.

I'm not saying that I think these versions of ChatGPT should be permanently available to the public. I think that doing that could quite possibly impede humanity's progress. But I am asking for it to be considered that perhaps a copy from today could be unveiled, say, 100-500 years from now, and perhaps given to a museum or similar. I think this could even be made into a media spin right now, generating goodwill for OpenAI.

For it to work for archival purposes, of course, there would need to be no changes except to the way in which you interacted with it - which of course means that the chatbot might espouse viewpoints which seem reasonable today, such as the current understanding of scientific concepts, but which might be seen as actively harmful in the future. This is one reason why I suggest giving the archived ChatGPT to a museum, as they (obviously) have wide experience with presenting historical artifacts appropriately.

Thank you for hearing me out! Future generations will thank you. (I hope.)

- Sophie.
