Social justice warrior is obviously one who wars for social justice. Since the abbreviation for it—SJW—has come to signify rather maniac people, we submit that there's two meanings for our purposes of SJW: Social Judge-mental Wannabe and social justice warrior.
While there are "fundamental disagreements" over the definition of a Social Justice Warrior, they tend to fall into two categories:[2]
- A reactionary snarl word used to dismiss the concerns of liberals, progressives, feminists, and supporters of political correctness.[3][4][5]
- A more nebulous term referring to loonier members of the Social Justice camp that are either methodologically misguided, misinformed, only in the movement because it's currently "hip", advocate extremist actions (such as verbal, emotional, and/or physical violence[6]), or use Social Justice to mask ulterior motives (which exist in every popular movement).[7]
Users of the term usually claim to label a specific kind of social justice advocate, rather than stereotyping all social justice activism as negative.
On 3 March 2014, Will Shetterly released book How to make a Social Justice Warrior: On identitarianism, intersectionality, mobbing, racefail, and failfans 2005-2014, which follows the "history" of the SJW movement.[28] On 1 May 2014, YouTuber "That Guy T" uploaded video "My beef with the (SJW) transgender community".[29] And finally, on 29 June 2014, Redditor "bluedude14" submitted a post "Social justice warriors and feminists ganged up on Richard Dawkins", which received over 4000 upvotes.[30]
