Paul Gottfried, a political theorist, observed in the 2008 speech that is widely credited as birthing the term alternative right.

Alt-Right has been a term with various uses from being a word for general Trump supporters to (ridiculously) being used a synonym for Neo-Nazism, with the middle-use being that of a synonym for White Nationalism. The most general meaning of the term can refer to something called the general Alt-Right, while Richard Spencer's "Alt-right" is a modern white nationalist and white identitarian political movement associated with activist Richard Spencer. The term is usually disavowed by those who do not identify with ethnonationalism (see: alt-lite). Not all contemporary white nationalists associate with the alt-right label and some are quite critical of it. (See also: White Nationalism 2.0)
