whiteness (n.) Old English hwitnes; see white (adj.) + -ness.[1]

There is general whiteness and racial whiteness.

Criticism[]

White people are believed to be inherently invested in whiteness by having been socialized to accept it as normal and good and to enjoy its benefits (see also, privilege, internalized dominance, and anti-blackness).[2]

Compare[]

candor (n.) "openness of mind, impartiality, frankness, freedom from reserve or disguise," c. 1600, from Latin candor "purity, openness," originally "whiteness, brightness, radiance," from candere "to shine, to be white" (from PIE root *kand- "to shine"). Borrowed earlier in English (c. 1500) with the Latin literal sense "extreme whiteness."[3]

leuko- before vowels leuk-, also sometimes in Latinized form leuco-/leuc-, word-forming element used from 19c. and meaning "white" (or, in medicine, "leukocyte"), from Greek leukos "clear, white," from PIE *leuko-, suffixed form of root *leuk- "light, brightness."[4]
